Chapter 16

Millie

After Corbin and Bella left, I sat on my sofa wondering about everything Corbin had said. Could it be that I was in the clear? Would everyone forget about all of my klutzy moves lately?

If so, poor Melinda. I mean, she kinda deserved it. But that wasn’t very nice of me to think. Our actions have consequences. Sometimes I wondered why I had so many issues when I wasn’t a bad person. I didn’t mess with married men—I was even waiting until I got married before I shared a bed with a man.

However, I wasn’t perfect. So, could it be that I’d done a few things that had consequences? Like the kind that put me face-first in a mud bath while news cameras were recording? Could be. Or, it could be the enemy attacking me for the good things I did. Or, it could be just because there was evil in this world.

Whatever the reason, I couldn’t judge Melinda for what she’d done. I could, however, pray for her and her family.

If she had fallen face-first into a vat of mud, I probably would have laughed at her and even liked and forwarded the social media posts. But this? No. It wasn’t funny. What she’d done was the sort of thing that ruined families and careers.

While I was grateful that the attention was off me, I wasn’t happy about why.

Getting caught in a cheesy hotel with one of our city council members, who was supposedly happily married, was a rotten thing. It was the sort of thing that would get him kicked off the council, even though he did a lot of good for our city. And it would give her soon-to-be ex more grounds for getting full custody of their kids.

Melinda was already in the middle of a tough divorce battle. This was only going to make things worse. And not only just for her, but for her kids as well as her husband.

At that very moment, a heavy heart brought me to my knees. I prayed for Melinda to get right with God, but more importantly, I prayed for her kids. I also prayed for the council member, Ron Jones, and his wife.

While I disagreed with divorce, I also knew there were valid reasons for one. Sleeping with another woman were grounds for Cindy Jones to seek a divorce from her husband of over thirty years. Thankfully, their kids were all grown.

Even though Ron had cheated on Cindy, I prayed that they could get counseling and work through these issues. I even prayed that Melinda and her husband could resolve their issues and stay together. To do that, Melinda would have to stop cheating on her husband and actually care for her kids.

Just as I was saying “Amen,” my phone rang. “Hi, Mom. What’s up?”

“Dear, did Corbin talk to you?”

I rolled my eyes. Of course she’d know about that already. “Yes, he did. Did you send him here?”

“Anna just told me Corbin was heading to your house earlier.
